2006- ID interactive dance show

ID interactive dance performance from Ariella Vidach on Vimeo.

Man-machine interaction takes place according to an action/reaction principle that regulates specific disciplines and behaviours. A process very similar to that of play, intended not as sheer entertainment but as a form of consciousness, exploration, and access to new cognitive dimensions. The performance assimilates and combines various ideas of interactive play, transforming the actions of the dancers into an allegory of existence. In submission to the rules and observed from macro and micro perspectives, the dancers express a vital bond and sense of belonging characteristic of a “community”; they move incessantly and their vigour activates an uncontrolled proliferation of visual and audio sequences, relationships and conflicts. Once the computer-play device is automated, the protagonists become “players”, confusing their reality as individuals with the metaphorical dimension of the game.

The interactive system

The dancer relates to space through the eye of a television camera which communicates movement to an interactive system made up of 3 software programs with various functions: INCROM for detection, through colour, of position, speed, acceleration, and size in space, AUXY max/msp for the processing of the audio part, and RESOLUME for image processing. This interactive architecture transforms the scenic space into a colour sensitive area, “picked up” and “detected” through the costumes worn by the performers and the beams of light produced throughout the performance.
